Overview. For me this was a most unusual trip as all other trips I’ve done have been on land. It was a most enjoyable experience and I did and saw more than I had expected to. And I learnt a lot, too, mainly about the differences between the islands, the antiquity of the flat, eastern islands against the relatively new mountainous western islands. But also about the history of the country, not only in the colonial period but also about its initial association with Guinea-Bissau immediately after independence.
The Boat The staff were all great. Attentive and caring, always ready with a towel and a drink on the return from an excursion, always ensuring that water glasses were kept full at mealtimes. And always engaging and fun. The bedrooms were kept spotlessly clean and always done discretely when the occupier wasn’t around. I was also very happy with the food. There was a good variety and plenty of it. The buffet style allowed for different dietary requirements to be accommodated. On one occasion I tracked down the cook to commend him on the meal.
The Guide Jacob is a most pleasant person. Very aware of his responsibilities to ensure the safety of all, both on the boat and to those who accompanied him on excursions. He made sure that everyone on board was well and that their needs were being met. On excursions he always found a good spot to have lunch.
The Itinerary I understand that the itinerary had to be changed due to tidal movements on Fogo but the replacement of that island with Sao Nikolau was good. In fact, Sao Nikolau turned out to be my favourite on the trip
The Excursions I discovered that in every case the cost of the excursions was higher than had been shown in the brochure sent to me just shortly before I set off for the trip but no explanation was given for that increase without notice.
Boa Vista Fortunately others on the excursion in Boa Vista were keen to sit in the sun on the back of the truck and had no desire to rotate. That suited me well. It might be useful to highlight that those not keen on extensive exposure to the sun should think hard about booking this excursion unless an inside seat can be assured. Despite that I enjoyed what we were shown on Boa Vista. However, better tours were to come on the mountainous islands, particularly Sao Nikolau and Sao Antao.
Sao Nikolau and Sao Antao These were excellent excursions both consisting of wonderful, grand mountains and magnificent views over valleys. As mentioned above, Sao Nikolau really hit the spot for me.
